Encompassing six distinct areas of Native American ruins, Hovenweep National Monument provides invaluable insight into the lifestyles of this cultural group. The towering ruins were constructed between 500 CE and 1300 CE, with most remaining structures built during the last century of this time. After a time of drought and internal conflict, the people who lived in these structures moved to the south and are the ancestors of the Pueblo, Zuni and Hopi tribes. Today, there are many ruins still visible, with hiking trails that allow visitors to explore these ancient structures up-close. Located west of the town of Cortez, CO the sites are in both Colorado and Utah, but the only camping available is at the visitors center at this northernmost site in Utah, the Square Tower Site.
Open daily year round.
Entry fee (7 day pass): Vehicle $6; Individual $3.
